Acting

This class will touch on comedy, character development, cold reading, improv, monologues, dialogues, presentation skills, memorization and emotional expression.

Ballet

The formal definition of ballet is ìa classical dance form characterized by grace and precision of movement and by elaborate formal gestures, steps, and poses. Our teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines such as Vagonova, Cecchetti, and Royal Academy of Dance.  We teach classical technique with an emphasis on proper alignment and placement through Barre and center work.  Ballet builds strength and flexibility.  Proper alignment and usage of feet, legs, hips, torso, shoulders, arms and head is taught while working in turnout position.  Ballet is great for gaining balance and poise.  Ballet is the foundation for all other styles of dance.  This is a great class for those who are interested in strict ballet technique or to enhance other styles.  It is highly recommended that all students take ballet.

Breakdancing

Breakdancing is also known as B-boying or B-girling. Breakin’ originated on the East Coast as a positive way to solve differences on the dance floor as opposed to other options.  Characterization/clowning is a large part of Breaking. Breakdancing incorporates elements of Capoeira (a Brazilian form of dancing and martial arts), Tap and Afro-Cuban movement.  This dance form gained popularity in the 1980’s with movies like Breakin’ and Beat Street.  This class teaches top-rocks, floor work, freezes, stalls, power moves and battling.  To advance to upper levels, students need a large amount of arm and abdominal strength as well as hand balance.  Students will work on group routines as well as individual routines since Breaking is a very individualized style.  While they will be learning fun tricks, students must be able to focus in this class to avoid injury.

Fairy Tale Theatre & Song

This class is a great introduction to drama and voice through the world of make believe. Students will learn through story-telling, puppets, games, props and instruments.  Each class will begin with a story and all activities for the day will relate to the story.  Students will sing-along with and act out their favorite fairy tales and Disney stories.  Basic movement will be incorporated in some scenes and songs. At this young age, we focus very little on vocal technique so as not to injure their growing vocal cords.  The focus in this class is to develop creativity, imagination and a love for drama and song.

Flying Ninja

This class focuses on blending classic and abstract acrobatics, mix martial arts, acro yoga, and aerial dance transitioned by contemporary movement.  This incredible combination creates a unique and sneaky style of movement, increasing technical skill and strength.

Hip Hop

This is a very high energy, urban form of dance.  Elements of Popping, Locking, R&B/Jazz Funk, House, Stepping and Breaking are taught.  Freestyle is emphasized so dancers can develop their own style.  Hip Hop is fast paced and fun.  This is a very popular up and coming form of dance.  Many of the moves you see in music videos are forms of Hip Hop or derived from Hip Hop.  However, do not be fooled into thinking everything you see is accurate representation of the style.  It is performed to the latest rap, R&B, hip hop and pop music.  While hip hop is a fun and more ìfreeî style of dance, it is important to know that there is strong technique behind the style.

Jazz

Jazz dance originally started as an improvisational expression of jazz music.  It was created from African rhythms and technique including body isolations.  It has since evolved into a structured form of dance made popular by its use on Broadway.  There is a lot of variety in jazz.  It can be slow, gentle, smooth, thrashy, upbeat, energetic, sharp and precise.  Placement for jazz technique works in a parallel position of the feet and legs.  Jazz isolations, style, turns, jumps, leaps, and extension are executed to contemporary music.

Lyrical

Lyrical dancing focuses on the lyrics and emotions of a song.  It is a very heartfelt, flowing and passionate form of dancing.  Lyrical dancing expresses a story to the audience.  Jazz and ballet technique are used in this form.  Lyrical can incorporate elements of modern as well.  Lyrical has a smooth, lengthened look.  Flexibility and extension are important in this style.  Dancers should take one hour of ballet along with the lyrical class.

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is a combination of dancing, singing, and acting.  Fun games are used to encourage imagination and creativity.  Students will work on improvisation, movement, characterization, ear training, vocal harmonies, monologues, and performance skills.  A variety of music is used, anything from popular to classical.  Scenes from various, age-appropriate musicals will be studied.  This is a perfect class for those who love to sing, act and dance.  This class should be combined with an acting, voice, tap, jazz or ballet class.

Pointe

Pointe is ballet technique executed on the very tips of the toes in Pointe shoes.  There are very strict requirements for beginning a Pointe regiment.   Dancers must have a significant amount of ballet training. Dancers must be at least 10 years old to begin pre-pointe and 12 years old to begin Pointe.  Dancers must demonstrate adequate strength, flexibility, alignment, stamina, and technique.  For a list of further requirements, please speak with the front desk.  Dancers are required to pass a physical and written test before purchasing Pointe shoes.

Poms

Execution of Jazz, Jazz Funk, and Hip Hop technique is combined with the sharp arm positions used in cheerleading and done with pom pons as props.  This is a very high-energy class.  Moves are sharp and precise.  Poms create a lot of visually fun formations.  Enthusiasm and fun facial expressions add a lot to the performance of this style.  (This style is currently not offered.  If you are interested and would like to see us start this style, please let us know.)

Tap

Tap can be described as drumming with your feet.  Clicking the taps on the toes and heels of the shoes makes rhythms and patterns.  Two forms of tap are taught at Inertia.  The Broadway style tap is upright and usually accompanied by a lot of arm movements.  Hoofin’ is a more free form and style with a deeper sound.  There is more emphasis on creating rhythms and sounds then there is on visual effect.  Tap can be executed to any type of music.  Some of these include: Swing, Big Band, Funk, Latin and Show tunes as well as acapella. Rhythm and syncopation are emphasized in this class.

Pre-Tumbling

Students will learn the basics of gymnastics through fun activities using different mats, the balance beam and trampoline.  This is a great class for this age group.  All equipment is bright and colorful which is great for keeping attention.  We work on strength, balance, coordination, listening skills and taking turns.

Tumbling

This class will focus on the floor element of gymnastics.  Tumbling works on strength, balance, coordination, flexibility and more.  Beginning/Intermediate students will work on sommersaults, hand stands, cartwheels, round offs, etc.  Intermediate/Advanced levels will work on hand springs, ariels, back tucks and more.

Voice

Students will work on various styles of vocal technique such as classical, pop, jazz and musical theatre.  Vocal theory, breathing technique, sight reading, annunciation and projection will also be covered.  It is important that students do not begin strict vocal training until twelve years old because of the development of the vocal cords.  We recommend that students take some private lessons as well in order to perfect their vocal techniques.
